Carbonated water (also known as soda water, sparkling water, fizzy water, or water with gas) is made by injecting pressurized carbon dioxide into water. The pressure increases the solubility and allows more carbon dioxide to dissolve than would be possible under standard atmospheric pressure. When the bottle is opened, the pressure is released, allowing gas to exit the solution, forming characteristic bubbles. Carbonation causes small bubbles to form, giving the water an effervescent quality.
